National Apprenticeship Week 2025 is all about the real learning moments—the wins, the struggles, and the breakthroughs that shape an apprentice’s journey. Whether it’s nailing a new skill, tackling an unexpected challenge, or having that ‘aha’ moment about your own potential, every step counts.

At Zero Gravity, we know learning isn’t just about textbooks and lectures. It happens in the doing—in the setbacks that fuel resilience, in the small wins that build confidence, and in the lessons you never saw coming. That’s why we’re shining a spotlight on apprentices who’ve been in the thick of it.

We asked apprentices to share the hurdles that tested them, the skills they mastered against the odds, and the lessons that will stick with them for life. Here’s what they had to say.

🤝 Trusting Myself: Learning to Make Decisions with Confidence

Apprentice, Gabriella Falco, KPMG

In the first few weeks of my apprenticeship, it seemed that everything and everyone was so polished, and the voice in my head told me ‘Nobody makes mistakes here!’. Eager to avoid any missteps, I adopted a cautious approach, seeking permission and reviews for every decision.

My manager noticed my tendency to over-consult. One afternoon, as I presented a minor change to a client report, seeking their approval before proceeding, they gently intervened. "You know," they said with a smile, "You've been doing a fantastic job so far. You're thorough and your approach is always logical. But I think it's time to start trusting your instincts a bit more."

I realised that while seeking guidance was crucial, relying solely on others for every decision could hinder my growth and learning. My manager suggested a gradual approach. They encouraged me to start with small decisions, trusting my judgment and taking ownership of the outcome. They also offered to be a sounding board, providing feedback and support when needed.

From that day forward, I embraced a balance between seeking guidance and trusting my own judgment. I learned an invaluable lesson that the best outcomes stem from having the courage to trust yourself, learn from your mistakes, and always come with a view of how best to proceed.

🔧 Breaking Bolts & Learning Lessons: The Power of Asking Questions

Car Build Apprentice, Nina Barnes, Prodrive

I have made my fair share of mistakes working practically with cars. One I find most memorable is getting a torque specification for a bolt wrong, subsequently over tightening it, stripping the bolt and breaking my tool! I was so embarrassed to have messed up so badly, but it taught me the priceless lesson of taking my time, and not being afraid to ask tonnes of questions (make sure you know WHY you are doing everything).

I also now will never forget torque specs of different bolts, making me all round a better technician!

My takeaway? Be the annoying one who keeps asking questions - be a knowledge sponge, and learn to brush off embarrassment when you screw up, it is a chance to do better next time!

💭 Overcoming Imposter Syndrome & Embracing Growth

Apprentice, Amaara Naveed, Lloyds Banking Group

From transitioning out of college to working in a professional environment, every day has been a learning curve. Like any new role, there have been challenges. One of the biggest has been imposter syndrome – feeling like I don’t know enough compared to my colleagues. But I’ve realised that apprenticeships are all about development, and none expects me to know everything right away. Asking questions, seeking feedback, and reminding myself that progress takes time has helped me push through. At first, it was a bit overwhelming – new systems, new expectations, and a lot to take in – but the support from my manager, team and fellow apprentices has made the transition smoother.

One of the biggest surprises? How supportive everyone is. My team is always happy to answer questions, and there’s a real culture of growth and learning.

📧 The Classic Email Fail – And What It Taught Me

Solicitor Apprentice, George Hannah, Lewis Silkin

In my first few weeks, I sent an email to a client without attaching the document I’d promised. When I realised, I was mortified! I imagined all the worst-case scenarios—losing the client, looking incompetent, and more. But when I emailed them again to apologise, the client replied with understanding and even offered a solution for future projects. This experience taught me two things: always double-check emails before hitting send, and that people appreciate honesty and problem-solving. I’m more confident in my communication now, and the mistake helped me build stronger professional relationships.

From Awkward Moments to Meaningful Growth

Apprentice: Lucy Jackson, Norton Rose Fullbright

During the first few months of my apprenticeship, I was in the office and joined what I thought was Teams meeting virtually. When the meeting started, I realised my colleagues were in fact sat together in a meeting room upstairs. I quickly gathered my things and headed upstairs to join everyone. I was inevitably late to the meeting. After apologising to everyone and getting started with the meeting, I spoke to my manager about what happened after, and we discussed the best way to avoid mistakes like this happening in the future. This conversation not only helped to develop my relationship with my manager, but showed me that mistakes are a part of personal development which is crucial as an apprentice!

And a special submission from Deloitte Partner, Ben Newton, whose apprenticeship journey was key in shaping his successful career…

Intimidating at First, Empowering in the End

Partner, Ben Newton , Deloitte

Like many apprentices who join an organisation who historically, pre-2011, exclusively recruited graduates, I initially experienced a touch of imposter syndrome. I was convinced everyone else, armed with their university degrees, possessed this innate intellectual prowess that I lacked.

I worried that if I didn't grasp a new concept or technical skill immediately, I'd be found out. However, I soon realised that everyone, regardless of their background, faces a learning curve. The environment at Deloitte was incredibly supportive, and I quickly discovered that asking questions and seeking help was not a sign of weakness, but rather a crucial part of the learning process.

Want to hear more about Ben’s journey from apprentice to Deloitte Partner? We’ll be sharing the full story during Careers Week—unpacking the challenges, lessons, and key moments that shaped his path to success.

Every apprentice’s journey is unique, but one thing’s for sure: those ‘oops’ moments often pave the way for the biggest ‘aha’ breakthroughs. Whether it’s bouncing back from challenges or celebrating new skills, apprenticeships offer real-world experiences that shape careers and build confidence.
